More than half of people living with an HIV diagnosis in the US and territories are over 50 years old. Due to advancements in medicine, folks who receive an HIV diagnosis are living long, full lives. But many people, providers included, do not think of older adults when they think of HIV.
This day is to bring awareness to the country that HIV does not discriminate based on age. For adults living with HIV, there are many physical and social things to think about. Medications, comorbidities, mental health, and finding purpose can all be a challenge in a society that ignores and stigmatizes HIV.
At ACRIA, we aim to provide training and workshops so that older adults living with HIV are better served and better informed. Our “Thriving at 50 and Beyond” group provides monthly presentations and our peer educators provide support and referrals where appropriate.
